Black Ops II adding 'Uprising' DLC April 16?

Marketing material for second expansion for latest Call of Duty says add-on will include four maps and new Zombie offering.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II will add its second downloadable content expansion, called Uprising, on April 16. That’s according to supposed Best Buy marketing material posted by a Twitter user today (via Joystiq).

According to the material, Uprising will add four new maps (Vertigo, Encore, Magma, Studio) and what appears to be a new Zombie-themed offering called “Mob of the Dead.”

If true, this would follow the formula set out by Black Ops II’s Revolution DLC, which featured four multiplayer maps and one Zombies mode. All Call of Duty DLC comes to Xbox 360 first, with subsequent launches for other platforms about a month later.

An Activision representative was not immediately available to comment.

Gearbox cautious about Ouya

CEO Randy Pitchford says he can’t justify appropriating resources to new platform until he knows how large install base will be.

BOSTON–Borderlands developer Gearbox Software is cautious about the Ouya. Speaking during a panel at PAX East, CEO Randy Pitchford said the studio has obtained some development kits, but is wary to support the platform due to concerns over install base.

“I think our mission is to entertain people, right? Wherever people happen to be. I think Ouya is great. I contributed to it on Kickstarter; I have a dev kit. Some people are playing with the kits around the studio,” Pitchford said. “I’m not sure how much effort to put towards that because[…]I don’t how large that audience is going to be yet. And we have to be responsible.”

Pitchford explained that the decision to support Ouya is ultimately about business.

“One of the challenges with game makers is increasingly people who get very good at certain things like programming or art or design, they expect to get paid a lot,” he said. “And what that means is it becomes very expensive to create video games. And if we don’t make as much as we spend, we don’t get to keep doing it. We don’t want to be amongst those studios that close down.”

Though Gearbox may not be an active supporter of Ouya, Pitchford said he expects up-and-coming developers to make compelling products for the device.

“I’m interested in the platform and I love efforts like that. And I’m certain that some industrious, clever, up-and-comers will take advantage of emerging platforms.”

The $99 Ouya will launch this June through the company’s website and via major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and GameStop.

Watch Dogs coming to Wii U?

Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy listings suggest Ubisoft’s upcoming action game in development for Nintendo’s newest platform.

Watch Dogs may be on the way for Wii U. Listings on Amazon, GameStop, and Best Buy suggest Ubisoft’s 2013-dated action game is in development for Wii U, in addition to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

An Ubisoft representative was not immediately available to comment.

Last week, leaked marketing material for Watch Dogs suggested the game would ship this holiday season for “all home consoles.”

Ubisoft has yet to announce a list of platforms or a concrete release date for Watch Dogs. Next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony are believed to be on store shelves for this holiday season. Sony may even announce the PlayStation 4 tomorrow.

Watch Dogs was announced during Ubisoft’s 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing last June with no official word on platforms or a release date. It is an all-new intellectual property in development at Ubisoft Montreal that focuses on hacking.

Watch Dogs Listed for Wii U – News

This follows on from our news post last week, which reported on rumours that Watch Dogs was headed to ‘all home consoles’ this holiday season. Gamestop, Amazon and Best Buy are all listing (and taking pre-orders for) Watch Dogs for the Wii U, as well as the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

No news yet on whether it will also be headed to the as-yet-unannounced new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, but so far those original rumours we reported on seem to have been borne out so you wouldn’t want to bet against it.

Ouya coming to Amazon, Gamestop, Best Buy, and Target from June

US retailers pledge to stock $99 Android-powered Kickstarter console.

Ouya, the Android-based console that smashed its funding target with $8.5 million in Kickstarter donations, will be available from plenty of US retailers when it officially launches in June.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said the machine will be available from Amazon, Gamestop, Target, and Best Buy.

Ouya will see a phased launch, with Kickstarter backers receiving the machine in March and those who pre-order now getting hold of the machine in April. The official launch, when the retailers will start stocking the device, is in June.

The Ouya is priced at $99.99, with the touchscreen controllers going for $49.99. “It“s a premium price for a controller,” said Uhrman, “but with the inclusion of the touchpad really makes it a premium in the marketplace.”

GameSpot has asked Ouya about whether the machine will be stocked by retailers internationally. Right now Ouya is charging $25 to ship to the UK.

When asked if Ouya felt threatened by the imminent announcement of new next-gen hardware from Sony and Microsoft, Uhrman asserted that Ouya will occupy a unique space in the market. “We don“t need to beat Xbox or Sony or any console that enters the marketplace,” said Uhrman, “we need to carve out our own niche.”

“Ouya offers a very different value proposition to the gaming you can currently experience. It“s a box designed specifically for the television that leverages the screen, we support 3D gaming, HD, we support the controller, we added a touchpad to the controller. The kind of content you“ll see on Ouya, it“ll be inventive and creative and has never been on the television.”

GRID 2 gets May release date and preorder bonuses

Upcoming racing game gets myriad preorder offers alongside May release date.

Upcoming racer GRID 2 will be released on May 28 in North America and May 31 in Europe, developer Codemasters has announced.

The release date arrives alongside myriad preorder offers at various US retailers. Customers opting for GameStop get the GRID 2: Turbo-Charged Edition, which dishes up two DLC packs: the McLaren Racing Pack and the GTR Racing Pack.

The McLaren Racing Pack plops a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 Special
Edition into the in-game livery, alongside a special online event and two new routes on the Brands Hatch GP circuit. The GTR Racing Pack delivers a Nissan GT-R SpecV road car plus daytime variants of the five Yas Marina circuit routes.

Meanwhile, Best Buy is giving out the IndyCar Edition, which hands players the keys to the Dallara IndyCar and the IndyCar Pace car alongside two new routes around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Oval Circuit.

Amazon US, on the other hand, will provide the Head Start Pack, which buffs up the garage with a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT and offers discounts for the game’s car upgrade store and a bonus on Codemasters’ social platform RaceNet.

Codemasters also announced that anyone who pre-orders GRID 2 at UK retailer GAME will receive the Brands Hatch Edition, which includes the McLaren Racing Pack and Head Start Pack.

“After four long years, Grid returns not just as a fast-paced street racer, but as an online experience that hopes to rank among the very best that gaming has to offer,” wrote Mark in his GRID 2 preview last year.

GRID 2 will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

Minecraft PC sells 8 million

Mojang’s open-ended creation game reaches new sales milestone following release at retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy.

Minecraft is already a big hit, but now it’s even bigger. The PC version of Mojang’s open-ended creation game has now sold over 8 million units, according to the game’s official website.

Creator Markus “Notch” Persson commented on the sales milestone on Twitter today, saying, “My face is making grinning sounds, so I assume it’s grinning.”

This latest sales milestone for Minecraft comes after the game became available via download card at major North American retailers like Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart.

Minecraft may have originated on the PC, but that is not the only platform the game has seen success on. The Xbox 360 version has sold over 4 million copies since launch in May, driving $80 million in revenue, with the mobile version selling 700,000 units as of January.

Wii U kiosks coming to retailers nationwide

Nintendo rolling out 5,000 interactive Wii U demo stations at retailers like Target, Best Buy, GameStop, and others.

Nintendo has held fast to the idea that when gamers try out the Wii U, they will “get it.” The Mario maker is giving gamers just that opportunity pre-launch, as the company is now beginning to roll out interactive Wii U kiosks in more than 5,000 retailers across the United States.

Gamers can find a Wii U demo station at a handful of retailers, including Target, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, and Toys ‘R’ Us. Kiosk content will vary by location; some will allow gamers to pick up a GamePad and play titles, while others will only feature video content.

Gamers can find a Wii U kiosk near them by plugging in their zip code at Nintendo’s special events website.

The Wii U is due out in North America on November 18 beginning at $300 for an 8GB basic model and scaling to $350 for the 32GB deluxe version that includes a copy of Nintendo Land.

The first high-definition system from Nintendo will launch with 23 titles, including Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Assassin’s Creed III.

The Wii U comes to Europe and Australia on November 30, with a launch in Japan rounding out the bunch on December 8.
