Free Portal 2 level editor arrives May 8

Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC hits PC and Mac machines in under two weeks; no word on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 releases.

Valve’s highly regarded game Portal 2 will add a puzzle editor for the PC and Mac on May 8, the company announced today. The editor–announced last October–will arrive as part of the free Perpetual Testing Initiative downloadable content.

The puzzle editor will allow players to create, share, and download Portal 2 levels. Players can publish their creations to the Steam Workshop, where users can browse, vote on, and select other levels to try out.

No mention was made of the Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC coming to the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, and as of press time, Valve had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

The PS3 version of Portal 2 supports Steam, but no Steam Workshop support on that platform has been announced. The Xbox 360 version of Portal 2 does not feature Steam integration of any kind.

The Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC is the second batch of post-release add-on content for Portal 2. It follows 2011′s free Peer Review content, which hit all platforms on October 4.

Free Portal 2 DLC out October 4

Complimentary Portal 2: Peer Review add-on arriving Tuesday for PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PS3; new co-op test track, Challenge mode included.

Following the release of the well-received Portal 2 in April, Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi said the puzzle game would receive free downloadable content over the summer. However, summer has come and gone without further word on the DLC.

Valve ended its silence today, titling the complimentary DLC “Portal 2: Peer Review” and scheduling it to arrive simultaneously on the PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 next Tuesday, October 4.

The pack continues the cooperative adventures of P-Body and Atlas, who will ultimately take on GLaDOS in a new test track. The pack also includes a Challenge mode playable both in single-player and co-op, as well as leaderboard support.

Portal 2–which has shipped 2 million units–is the continuation of the 2007 Orange Box pack-in Portal. The single-player portion of the new title continues the travails of human lab rat Chell, who in the original game used a portal gun to create interdimensional openings on ceilings, walls, and floors in an effort to escape the Aperture Science labs and thwart the diabolical artificial intelligence known as GLaDOS.
