Best PlayStation Vita Game of 2012

What a sadly tumultuous first year for the PlayStation Vita. I’m not going to white-knight its qualities – anyone who has one knows how much potential the system has – but despite its poor sales and constant accusations of having few or according to some ‘no gaemz’, the Vita has a pretty stellar stable of quality experiences.

Most enhanced ports were omitted from the running for Vita Game of the Year, but even without Mortal Kombat or Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, there’s still a great crop of fresh goodies to pick from. In fact I’d have loved to have added a few titles to the list of nominees, but not everyone can be on top. So, without further ado…

Here are the Nominees:

Gravity Rush

LittleBigPlanet Vita

Persona 4: Golden

Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward

And the Winner is:

Persona 4: Golden

What a year it’s been. The Vita, like the 3DS before it, has been topped in its first year by a truly outstanding port of a bona fide classic! Where the 3DS was able to bring new life to what is considered one of the best games of all time in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, the Vita was able to bring the 60+ hour Persona 4 to the system – along with a host of additions – in the form of Persona 4: Golden. It’s really hard to try to nail down precisely what it is about Persona 4 that makes it such a fantastic, outstanding game, but I’ll give it my best shot:

Not only is Persona 4 one of the best told RPG stories of all time, with some of the most well developed characters in the genre, but there’s so much content that you’re easily looking at 100+ hours of gameplay, and that’s before factoring in the added content of Golden which makes an already fantastic game even better, all flawlessly integrated so that you almost forget it wasn’t there from day one.

Added gameplay features change the feel of the game without sacrificing what made it so special in the first place, and considering how much of an effect Gravity Rush had on us as a team, as well as the unquestionable quality and potential in LittleBigPlanet Vita, the fact that Persona 4: Golden stands head and shoulders above these titles as our PlayStation Vita Game of the Year should be reason enough to celebrate. This one is not to be missed for any Vita owner!

Best New IP of 2012

You would never imagine just how much work went into finding nominees for the Best New IP category. When almost every major release is a sequel, remake, port, re-release, re-boot, or is in some way based on a TV show, movie, or book series, the pool for new IP’s is incredibly limited.

Not only did we have to comb through our review database for games that were completely original, but we also had to choose our nominees based on their potential for being prospective franchises. What we decided on was a stealthy steampunk game, an open world anime-inspired sci-fi title, a music-based platformer, and a beautifully rendered, enigmatic experience. All of these games were wonderful and original, and choosing just one as a winner was a real task, and there was certainly some dissent amongst the crew, but after a battle royale, we managed to pick just one.

Here are the Nominees:

Dishonored

Gravity Rush

Sound Shapes

The Unfinished Swan

And the Winner Is…

Dishonored

Sneak, deceive, attack, kill! It doesn’t matter what path you take through Dishonored, whether you’re choosing to be entirely non-lethal or killing everyone around you, this game is fresh. While no one element is completely original, the way the game’s world and gameplay mechanics blend together to make this a truly special first entry in a potential franchise.

When the only complaint about a game is that you wished there was more of it, it’s not really a complaint, is it? Bethesda’s Pete Hines has candidly stated that we clearly have a new franchise on our hands, and that couldn’t make us happier since we’d all love to see more of this world – especially given the potential of the setting and theme – and that’s why Dishonored is the Best New IP of 2012.

Best Original Music Score of 2012

If you were to reminisce about your favourite moments in gaming, you’d likely remember the fantastic pieces of music that accompanied them. This is because soundtracks in video games shouldn’t just accompany the gameplay, they should enhance the experience in every way imaginable. All of the games on this list had a score that blew people away, and even though only one can come out on top, all of them are exceptional.

Here are the Nominees:

Journey

Journey

Halo 4
Halo

Gravity Rush

GR

Mass Effect 3

ME3

And the Winner is…

Journey

Winner

Journey is much more than a video game. It’s an emotional experience. If you haven’t played it yet then go and do so, because if you don’t you’ll be missing out on one of the best games of this generation. All of the features present in Journey contribute and work together in order to create an experience like no other, and I challenge anyone to play Journey and not feel moved.

However, while all aspects of Journey are beautifully implemented, the soundtrack stands out above all others. The score – which was composed by Austin Wintory – accompanies you throughout your Journey, acting as a constant companion that is always twisting and pulling on your emotions. I sat here for a while before I realised that there are no words in my possession that can adequately describe this soundtrack.  I fear that my floundering attempts to describe it wouldn’t even begin to convey just how beautiful the Journey OST is. Instead, I will simply say this: from the very start, to the very end, the Journey OST allows you to feel whatever it is you need to feel at any moment. That is why it deserves to be called the Best Original Music Score of 2012.

Best Action-Adventure Game of 2012

The action-adventure genre is certainly one of the most interesting in gaming, simply because of the sheer quantity of games that are released for it each year. Be it Assassin’s Creed, Grand Theft Auto, or Zelda, you’re almost certain to find something you like. However, it also comes with a downside: with so many great games releasing in the genre each year, choosing the ‘best’ is a daunting proposition, and one which is bound to leave some disappointed. Every single game on this list is more than worthy of this accolade, and it should go without saying that each game is a must-buy. However, there was one game which came out just ahead of the rest.

Here are the Nominees:

Assassin’s Creed III

Dishonored

Gravity Rush

Hitman: Absolution

And the Winner is…

Dishonored

Dishonored manages to be that rarest of things: a new IP, with new ideas and superb execution. The real standout point of the game has to be its variety and the number of ways you can progress though each assassination. Do you progress stealthily, engage in all-out combat, or do you utilise a mixture of both approaches? It’s even possible, but difficult, to complete the entire game without killing a single enemy. Levels are also beautifully detailed, with a number of branching paths adding a sandbox feel to each individual area that wonderfully compliments the gameplay.

Dishonored is an excellent game in its own right, but the fact that the developers were willing to do something new and untested and managed to execute it so well makes Dishonored more than deserving of the title of Best Action-Adventure Game of 2012.
