LucasArts Shut Down By Disney, Raven Shares Jedi Knight Source Code – News

Disney, which acquired Lucasfilm and LucasArts last year for $4.05 billion, shut down the LucasArts division. In an official statement, Disney said:

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

Before the closure of LucasArts, Star Wars 1313 was being made as was the studio’s other project Star Wars First Assault. However, there is a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. As a gift to their loyal fans, Raven, developers of Jedi Outcast and its sequel Jedi Academy, have released the source code for both games.

In an interview by Kotaku, Raven said “We loved and appreciated the experience of getting to make Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy for LucasArts. As a gift to the persistently loyal fanbase for our Jedi games and in memory of LucasArts, we are releasing the source code for both games for people to enjoy and play with.”

DICE 'very interested' in Battlefield 4 eSports

Developer says it is looking at competitive gaming support for upcoming military shooter; game won’t have any co-op.

DICE is “very interested” in eSports support for Battlefield 4, according to studio general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson.

“I can say that eSports is an area that we are very interested in,” Troedsson told Leutin09 in a new video interview posted on YouTube.

Troedsson did not go into any further detail, as only Battlefield 4′s single-player has been revealed that far. Still, he explained that eSports is a growing phenomenon and that it will be no easy task to pull it off in the final product.

“It’s not as easy as some game developers like to think; that’s it’s just that you do A, X, Y, and Z and everything is done. It’s actually much bigger than that now,” Troedsson said. “There are some people that actually see this as a new phenomenon and that’s not true either. It’s been around for a long time. It’s just recently that it’s really starting to take off…”

Troedsson further explained that Battlefield multiplayer has always been “very competitive” and “the heart” of every new installment in the series.

“And that won’t change moving forward,” he said.

Also during the interview, Troedsson revealed that Battlefield 3′s cooperative mode will not return for Battlefield 4. “We don’t have co-op in Battlefield 4. We have made that decision. We’re focusing everything we have on multiplayer and the single-player,” he said.

Battlefield 4 launches this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but not Wii U. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

The Walking Dead season two coming Q3 2013, says Telltale

Telltale clarifies earlier reports to say gamers will be able to play more of The Walking Dead this year.

Telltale’s second season of its critically acclaimed The Walking Dead will begin its episodic release in Q3 2013.

Speaking to Game Informer, a Telltale representative said “the current estimated release window for Season Two of The Walking Dead is for fall of ’this’ year (2013), and not ’next’ year (2014) as has been reported after a recent interview. We apologize for any confusion and thank you and all of our fans for your continued excitement for Telltale’s series.”

In a previous interview with Eurogamer, Telltale CEO Dan Connors suggested the game’s second season wouldn’t see a release until the second half of 2014.

Telltale writer Gary Whitta has already teased the possibility of some new The Walking Dead content being released to bridge the gap between season one and season two, and presumably he’s not talking about Activision’s FPS take on the TV series being released this month.

The Walking Dead picked up two gongs at the BAFTA Game Awards on Tuesday night.

Alongside season two of The Walking Dead, Telltale is working to adapt Bill Willingham’s Fables graphic novels.
