DSi, DSi XL price drops on May 20

Nintendo cutting price of DSi to $100 and DSi XL to $130 later this month, as a means to provide “even greater incentive to pick up the systems.”

Gamers on the market for a DSi or a DSi XL may want to wait a couple weeks. Nintendo today announced that it will cut the prices for both systems on May 20. The DSi will drop to $100 (from $150) and the DSi XL will be available on that day for $130 (from $170).

Wal-Mart has already put the price cut for the DSi XL into effect. The system is available today from the company’s website for the discounted $130 rate.

The DSi and DSi XL price cuts will make the 3DS the most expensive Nintendo portable on the market. That system presently retails for $170, after its price was slashed by nearly a third from a launch price of $250.

Nintendo said the DSi and DSi XL price cuts will provide “an even greater incentive to pick up the systems,” which currently boasts a software lineup of over 2,000 games. May 20 also marks the release date for Mario Tennis Open and the new midnight purple 3DS.

Midnight Purple 3DS hitting May 20

Nintendo adding fifth color option for latest portable next month alongside release of Mario Tennis Open.

A new 3DS color is in bloom. Nintendo will release a Midnight Purple 3DS on May 20 in North America, the company announced today. The new color will arrive alongside Mario Tennis Open, first original Mario Tennis title since 2005′s Mario Tennis: Power Tour.

The Midnight Purple 3DS will retail for $170 in the United States, and will become the fifth available color option for the device. Existing 3DS colors include Cosmo Black, Aqua Blue, Flame Red, and Pearl Pink.

The 3DS launched in North America in March 2011, and originally retailed for $250. Following disappointing launch sales, Nintendo implemented an aggressive price cut, shaving the system’s price down to $170.

As for Mario Tennis Open, the game will make use of the 3DS’ various features, allowing players to use the touch screen for shot selection and the system’s gyroscopic sensor to tilt the camera and look around the court. The game will also feature local wireless play for up to four players and, for the first time in the series, online singles or doubles matches.

The site also displays a note with Japanese writing and indicates that Namco Bandai toy maker subsidiary Banpresto is involved with the project in some form.

During its video presentations today, Nintendo revealed several news nuggets, including word that The Last Story will land in North America this year and Mario Tennis Open will be served up the 3DS on May 20.

Mario Tennis Open served up on 3DS May 20

Nintendo brings arcade-style mascot sports game to latest portable with online play, touch-screen and gyroscopic support.

The multitalented Mario is bringing another of his hobbies to 3DS owners, as Nintendo of America today announced that Mario Tennis Open will be released on May 20.

Nintendo confirmed the release date today as part of a Nintendo Direct presentation. The company’s European arm separately announced a May 25 release for the game in that region.

The latest arcade-style tennis game to feature the mascot will make use of its host hardware’s various features, allowing players to use the touch screen for shot selection and the system’s gyroscopic sensor to tilt the camera and look around the court. The game will also feature local wireless play for up to four players and, for the first time in the series, online singles or doubles matches.

This will be the first original Mario Tennis title since 2005′s Mario Tennis: Power Tour. However, in 2009, Nintendo rereleased the GameCube title Mario Power Tennis on the Wii with New Play Control support for the Wii Remote. As it did with those titles, Camelot Software Planning is handling development duties for Mario Tennis Open.
