Japanese Fans Picks the Anime Song Performer They Would Like to Hear Sing US National Anthem

April 21, 2013 in Anime News

Who should perform opening for future MLB versus NPB game

In 2004, the Tampa Bay Rays played the Yomiuri Giants in Japan’s Tokyo Dome. What made this memorable for anime fans was that the US national anthem was performed by Minako Honda, who sang the ending for the original Hunter x Hunter anime and the theme from Mardock Scramble. Considering this, the otaku at Biglobe asked themselves what anison artist should sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a future MLB versus NPB game.

MLB 13: The Show (PSV) – Review

April 5, 2013 in Gaming News

Sony’s MLB: The Show 13 stands tall as the current, arguably undisputed, king of console baseball simulations but it is still only in its sophomore season on the Vita. This second outing shows even more promise for the franchise than the first but it still largely lives in the shadow of its magnificent HD counterpart. Presentational hiccups and finicky controls are the most glaring issues here but if you are able to look past them you are treated to possibly the best portable baseball experience available today.

New for 2013 is The Show Live Mode that offers updates based on the outcome of actual major league games, which should be enough to keep players interested for the duration of the season. Other play options include taking control of one or more teams and guiding them through a season, the post-season (also new for 13), or multiple years in Franchise mode. The Road to the Show mode is still a major draw, allowing you to guide a player from the minor leagues to an All Star career in the majors.

On the field, The Show is still a winner. The various ways that fielding, pitching, and hitting have been interpreted through the in-game mechanics just seems to make perfect sense. That being said they’ve obviously designed with a console experience in mind. Take for example the pulse pitching system. The idea is that you should press the button to throw the ball when the diameter of the pulsating circle is at its smallest. The problem is that the timing is noticeably harder to master with the smaller screen and the less responsive button presses lead to some wild pitches that have the capacity to drastically alter a game at a crucial moment. On a more positive note, batting is a thrilling challenge that’s part guesswork and part timing that results in a feeling that is wholly satisfying when you are able to connect on a big hit.

The controls can be a tad iffy. As I already explained, timing the button presses just right for pitches can be quite bothersome but fielding has its own control issues as well. The small size of the baseball on the Vita’s portable screen, combined with the somewhat limited range of the analog sticks, can seem like a match made in hell when trying to scoop ground balls to make a play. The batting system has been further developed to account for timing, positioning, and contact which means you can make up for slightly off timing if you make solid contact and vice versa. The duels between batters and pitchers are perhaps the most thrilling part of the core MLB 13: The Show experience, though again, the minuscule dot of the digitized baseball can make it hard to adjust your eyes to develop the visual acuity necessary to rattle off consistently good at bats.

MLB 2K13 due March 5

January 9, 2013 in Gaming News, Otaku News

2K Sports bringing baseball sim to Xbox 360 and PS3 later this year; $1 million Perfect Game challenge also returning.

MLB 2K13 will be on store shelves March 5 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, 2K Sports announced today. The game’s existence had been in question, as 2K Sports parent publisher Take-Two Interactive’s deal with Major League Baseball was reportedly due to expire at the end of 2012.

According to today’s announcement, Take-Two has reached a new agreement with Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association, and Major League Baseball Advanced Media. Terms of this deal were not disclosed.

’We’d like to thank our league partners for their support in helping us reach an agreement to bring back MLB 2K,’ said 2K Sports vice president of marketing Jason Argent in a statement.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price was chosen as the cover athlete for MLB 2K13. Price was the 2012 American League Cy Young Award winner, posting a 20-5 record and a league-topping 2.56 ERA.

Also returning for MLB 2K13 is the Perfect Game Challenge, which carries a $1 million cash prize. This year, a new contest format will be introduced with “exciting ways to win.” These were not detailed, though 2K Sports said additional details on the contest will be announced later. The Perfect Game Challenge is not open to those in Arizona, Connecticut, Maryland, North Dakota, or Vermont.

MLB 2K13 is in development at Novato, California-based Visual Concepts.

HBO, Xfinity, MLB apps hit Xbox Live

March 27, 2012 in Gaming News, Otaku News

Kinect-enabled streaming apps from trio of major media companies land on Microsoft’s online marketplace.

Xbox 360 gamers in the United States now have new streaming options for movies, TV, and sports. Microsoft announced today that apps for entertainment services HBO Go, Comcast’s Xfinity, and MLB.TV are available for download on Xbox Live. Each service makes use of Microsoft’s Kinect technology, allowing users to control the apps using voice and gesture controls.

The HBO Go app brings the network’s entire suite of programming to the Xbox 360, allowing gamers to stream shows like Game of Thrones, Entourage, and Deadwood. It is available only to those with a full HBO subscription. The Xfinity app features content from Comcast’s catalog, which includes various movies and television shows.

Lastly, the MLB.TV app (also available in Canada and Mexico) offers baseball fans over 2,400 games, as well as a split-screen mode, where users can stream two games simultaneously. MLB.TV was previously available for the PlayStation 3.

Each app is free to download, but users will need to pay each service’s subscription fee and hold an Xbox Live Gold membership to access the content. Today’s wave of new streaming options pile on top of previously released streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, ESPN 3, and Crackle.

Check Out the SPIN-Curated Soundtrack to ‘Major League Baseball 2K12′

February 16, 2012 in Music News, Otaku News

SPIN has partnered with our good pals at 2K Sports to help curate a 13-song soundtrack for Major League Baseball 2K12, the ninth iteration of the ever-popular MLB 2K series. The game, due in stores on March 6, marks the first time that the joystick-jockeys at SPIN have collaborated on a video game soundtrack, and we were sure to include a exclusive original track by our favorite Alabama grinders G-Side (read our feature!), the synthtastic “Put Me in the Game.”

Says our trusty editorial director Charles Aaron: “When the match is right, music and sports can complement each other in a profound way, so curating SPIN’s first video game soundtrack was an exciting challenge. We were thrilled to be asked by 2K Sports, and took seriously the responsibility of sharing some of our favorite tracks with MLB fans.”

MLB 2K12 and NBA 2K12 bundled on Xbox 360

February 9, 2012 in Gaming News, Otaku News

2K Sports combining upcoming baseball simulator and October’s basketball game into $70 package due March 6 exclusively for Microsoft’s console.

2K Sports is hoping to draw cheers from sports game fans this March with a new double pack. Today, the company announced the MLB 2K12/NBA 2K12 Combo Pack, due out exclusively for the Xbox 360 on March 6.

Set for release alongside the stand-alone version of Major League Baseball 2K12 next month, the $70 combo pack includes a new copy of the company’s latest baseball game, as well as the full version of October’s NBA 2K12. That game scored a strong critical reception upon release and has sold over 4 million units.

As for Major League Baseball 2K12, 2K Sports promises the title will be a more faithful representation of the game in terms of presentation and gameplay. Additionally, the company is holding a tournament to hand out $1 million for the first gamers to record a perfect game.

MLB 12 hits PS3 and PS Vita on March 6

November 10, 2011 in Gaming News, Otaku News

Boston Red Sox All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to headline next year’s baseball release from Sony.

2K may have the multiplatform Major League Baseball rights tied up, but as a first-party publisher, Sony has been producing its own critically lauded MLB games for years. Almost ready for another go around the bases, next year’s entry now has a release date, platforms, and cover athlete.

Sony announced this week that Boston Red Sox All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez will be taking the role of cover athlete for the 2012 iteration. A release date of March 6 was also revealed for the PlayStation 3 and all-new PS Vita versions.

Next year’s entry will mark the first time Sony’s baseball franchise is not appearing on the PlayStation 2 or PSP. It also represents the series’ inaugural outing on Sony’s forthcoming handheld, the PS Vita. In a comment on the official PlayStation Blog, a Sony representative said to “stay tuned” in regard to potential cross-system save portability.

MLB 12 is confirmed to support the PS Move motion controller, although it’s unclear to what degree. Last year’s game also had PS Move support, but only in the Home Run Derby mode.
