VIDEO: James Cameron Comments on "Battle Angel" Adaptation

Cameron calls sci-fi action manga a “great kick ass story” – just not a high priority

Avatar director James Cameron recently commented to MTV on his long gestating adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s action sci-fi manga Battle Angel Alita. Unfortunately, while priority of the “great kick ass story” isn’t quit sunk at Titantic depths, it is below the Avatar sequels. More after the jump.

David Guetta, Avicii, Tiesto Will Play Electric Daisy Carnival 2012

The lineup for this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival in Vegas is here — well, almost all of it. MTV reports that the first (pretty stacked) batch of performers will include Avicii, Afrojack, Tiësto, Benny Benassi, Knife Party, and

MTV Revives Avant-Garde 1985 ‘ArtBreaks’ Series

On April 2, thousands of 16 and Pregnant loyals will emit a collective “WTF?” — that is, unless they were also watching MTV 27 years ago, in which case they might say, “Oh, good, this arty thing is back!” That’s because the network recently announced that they would be reviving its “Art Breaks” series in line with a slew of similarly retro decisions…

MTV and Vevo Kiss and Make Up: Welcome Back, Lady Gaga!

MTV has spent the past few years trying to remind us they’re no longer “Music Television,” a campaign that was aided by the fact that the channel and its associated websites haven’t been able to play videos from Universal Music Group since August 2010, when the label yanked its clips from Viacom’s networks so they could air exclusively on Vevo (UMG is a co-owner of the video service). But now, after two years of no Lady Gaga videos other than MTV-related performances on MTV.com, the two sides have kissed and made up.

CNET reports (via Billboard) that the reunion, which seemed to manifest itself live on MTV’s sites last Friday (March 2), means big things for both parties, even if you ignore the as-yet-unreleased financial terms of the deal. Not only does MTV now have licensing agreements with all four major labels — Sony Music, EMI, Warner Music Group, whose content they nabbed exclusively just before the Vevo falling out, and now UMG with Vevo — but Vevo has yet another bargaining chip in its fledgling negotiations with Facebook, a rumored new home for its video content once its contract with YouTube expires.

As for what viewers can expect, a whole lot more Lady Gaga is probably a given. Other artists returning to MTV.com (and MTV in between episodes of Jersey Shore)? Eminem, 50 Cent, the Black Eyed Peas, LMFAO, No Doubt, U2, and the rest of Universal’s formidable roster.

You can once again watch "Bad Romance" on MTV.com!

I Want My Revolt? Diddy Launching Music Channel

Oprah’s got company: the equally ridiculously wealthy Sean Combs has officially announced plans to launch a music-and-news channel that will vie for viewership with MTV and BET. Fitting with the spirit of the times, the channel will be called Revolt. According to a report from the New York Times, Combs first spoke of the venture last month with Broadcasting & Cable.

No word yet on when the channel will launch, but at the moment, talks continue with both Comcast and Time Warner as to how many of us will be able to enjoy the (of course) social media-friendly Revolt. However, Comcast (the largest cable TV provider in the U.S.) has definitively picked it up after agreeing last year to add new channels owned by minorities, as stipulated by their majority stakes acquisition deal of NBCUniversal. Nevertheless, we’re betting that its availability will be selective, at least at first. In other words, when it comes to how much you have to pay in order to watch it, Revolt might fall somewhere near Fuse, rather than MTV, in the music channel lineup.

Revolt is only the latest venture from the mogul; it follows his clothing line (Sean John), his film production company (Bad Boy Entertainment), his high-end Atlanta restaurant (Justin’s), and, most recently, the "super-premium" vodka brand he promotes, Ciroc. A lot of these ventures have had their snags (see: the shuttering of the New York Justin’s location, Sean John’s sweatshop issues, Bad Boy Entertainment’s lawsuits and more lawsuits), so here’s hoping Revolt doesn’t fall prey to similar pitfalls. Check out Combs’ vlog announcement below, in which he lays out some serious truth about the need for diversity in media ownership.

By the way, did we mention Diddy’s totally hiring for the channel?

Hulu Plus now live on Wii, delayed further for 3DS

Streaming video service now available for Nintendo’s home console, pushed to later in the year for portable.

In October, Nintendo said it would bring Hulu Plus to the Wii and 3DS before the year was out, but that did not happen. Today, Nintendo launched the service for the Wii, but 3DS gamers will have to wait even longer.

Wii gamers can download the Hulu Plus app today on the system through the Wii Shop Channel, and those without a Hulu Plus account will score a free two-week trial. As for the Hulu Plus 3DS app, Nintendo said only that it was planned for “later this year.”

Already available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Hulu Plus is a subscription-based service that lets users stream TV episodes from networks like Fox, ABC, NBC, Comedy Central, MTV, and more. It also features a selection of films. The service costs $7.99 a month and includes “limited” advertising in programs.

Beyonce and Jay-Z Are Working on Mysterious New Material

It’s only been 38 days since the birth of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Wentz-haired Blue Ivy Carter, but if any of us thought maybe the most powerful couple in music might want to take a breather and enjoy some chill time (it’s not like superstardom comes with a crap maternity leave program), we were wrong.

Turns out, Bey and Jay can’t sit still. Reports began surfacing yesterday that the couple are each working on multiple projects. Of course, neither Mom nor Dad are commenting on their new work just yet, but everyone else seems to be doing quite a bit of it for them. Yesterday, OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder (who also counts songwriting credits on songs like Beyoncé’s "Halo," Kelly Clarkson’s "Already Gone," and Adele’s "Rumour Has It," the latter for which he just received an Album of the Year Grammy along with the rest of the 21 crew) told AOL’s BoomBox that he and Bey were already in the process of picking songs for not one but two new albums for 2012. He says he’s been pitching her "songs about parenthood" and that the new material will "play with sounds outside of…R&B" (which, we hope, doesn’t imply a children’s album — not to say we wouldn’t enjoy Bey singing us to sleep every night).

As for Jay, both ?uestlove and Pharrell Williams have been (literally) cornered by the press into divulging that they’re getting into projects with Hov. Pharrell sheepishly told MTV that, yes, he’s been working on something and "it’s crazy," whatever that means. Questo, too, called whatever "secret project" that’s been in the works between he and Jigga "real big," (via Hollywood.tv) and said it’d be coming out in the next few weeks. UPDATE: ?uestlove tweeted to alert the world the “secret” project was a reference to Jay’s two shows at Carnegie Hall… which already happened.

All the collaborators seemed fairly reticent on the subject of new material, which would imply that there’s something happening that they’re under pressure to shut up about, but all we know for sure is that, for the Carter family in 2012 — apart from playing Grammys hooky in exchange for a Brooklyn pizza date — there’s no such thing as a hiatus.

See the Black Keys’ ‘Cheap and Awesome’ Video for ‘Gold on the Ceiling’

The Black Keys’ latest video shows how the Ohio rockers have grown and changed, but also how they haven’t. “Gold on the Ceiling,” a punchy, swag-friendly rave-up from last year’s glitz-meets-grit El Camino, is one of the best indications of how guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney have evolved from R&B-tinged garage-rock to glammed-out T. Rex boogies without missing a domineering step. The video, which premiered last night on MTV, shows El Camino‘s trademark not-actually-an-El-Camino van, but otherwise largely shrugs off the overt viral potential of, say, previous single “Lonely Boy” and its Carlton-destroying dancing dude.

Instead, the “Gold on the Ceiling” video follows the Black Keys as they play live, including footage from their El Camino release show at New York’s Webster Hall — the one we photographed here!. The guys tell MTV’s interviewer they picked a live video this time around because it’s “cheap and awesome,” and while the clip doesn’t look cheap — so many different angles, from so many different shows around the world! — if you give in to the Keys’ hook-packed glam-pop, you certainly might find yourself responding like the concertgoers in the video to its fully evident awesomeness. You might also want to go vintage clothes shopping with the dudes.

Did we say there was no viral potential? MTV’s interview clips go on to include the Black Keys’ comments on Tumblr time-waster topic du jour Lana Del Rey, of whose rapid ascent to Saturday Night Live status the Key’s Carney says, “It’s different for everybody.” He adds: “I feel bad for a lot of bands who are starting out with the way things are now, just with blogs and everything … The trends flip over so fast and something’s cool and not cool and it all happens within like two or three months.” Of music critics who ignore the Black Keys: “[It's] ’cause they’re pricks!”

Pricks take note: a collaboration between the Black Keys and their Twitter pal Ke$ha is not out of the question! “We’re friends with her,” Carney tells MTV of the singer-rapper, who recently teamed up with the Flaming Lips. “We’ve known her since way before she was famous.” Then the Black Keys must know Ke$ha probably would’ve wanted their “Gold on the Ceiling” video to include a little more, well, gold — or at least glitter — on the ceiling, right?

Guns N’ Roses Announce NYC, Chicago Club Gigs

Axl Rose spends a giant chunk of Guns N’ Roses’ arena shows running to a small curtained off area at the far back of the stage every chance he gets. Will he be able to pull that mysterious move off in front of a smaller club audience? We’re about to find out! For the first time since a few surprise fashion week appearances in 2010, Guns N’ Roses are playing clubs!

The band announced six shows (“so far,” per a press release) today: A February 10 date at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom, followed two days later by a show at Terminal 5, and a February 15 show at Webster Hall, which the band is rebranding as “The Ritz” for the night as a nod to the February 1988 MTV show the original lineup played to great acclaim. February 19 they’ll play Chicago’s House of Blues, and February 23 they’re booked at Silver Spring, Maryland’s Fillmore. They’ll return to New Jersey — where SPIN saw Axl trot offstage 29 times — for a February 24 show at Atlantic City’s House of Blues.

New York ticket presales begin tomorrow, January 31 at 10 a.m. ET, and the regular on-sale starts the following day.

GN’R will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 5 in Cleveland. There’s still no word who exactly will show up to the ceremony from the original lineup, but people sure do love to speculate about that.
