Next multimedia project from the house of Layton hits 3DS

We’ve posted before about Level-5′s Youkai Watch—the latest multimedia project from the folks behind Professor Layton and Inazuma Eleven—and now the Nintendo 3DS game has a release window. The spirits are set to invade 3DS in Japan this summer. Read on for more.

Pikachu 3DS XL Zaps North America on March 24th – News

The Pikachu-themed 3DS XL system, originally released in Japan, was seen in a recently released commercial for the upcoming game Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. Nintendo remained mum about the appearance of the Japan-only 3DS variant, but now we know what we’ve suspected: the Pikachu 3DS will soon be on American soil.

The Pikachu 3DS XL comes with a 4GB SD card and will retail for $199.99. It will release on March 24th, the same day as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity.

Additionally, Nintendo is offering a free game to those who register a 3DS XL and either Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity or Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon between March 21st and April 30th. Customers who register both at Club Nintendo will receive a download code for one of the following games: Super Mario 3D Land, Star Fox 64 3D, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone!, or Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive!

VIDEO: "Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch" Launch Trailer

Level-5 and Studio Ghibli PlayStation 3 game explores “How far will you go to save someone you love?”

The Professor Layton series is at its heart a pure puzzle game. You solve riddles, logic problems, math equations, sliding puzzles, and many other types of brain-bending fare. However, there is a glorious charm to it; a pleasant art style, mood setting music, interesting characters, and intriguing plots.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask will give your brain a run for its money. This truly is the gamers’ version of Sherlock Holmes. And so we tip our normal sized hats to the professor: you, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar; you’ve earned this win.

Weekly Sales Analysis, 1 December – Wii U Launches in Europe

Overview

The Wii U was released in Europe this week, while it is in its second week on sale in North America.  Hardware sales have dropped by a third this week, which is typical the week following Black Friday. Year on year sales are down 18 percent, despite the added sales of the Wii U and PlayStation Vita.

Four games debuted in the top 30 this week. Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen OG (PS3) debuted at number nine with sales of 215,426. Other debuts include Far Cry 3 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney (3DS), and Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Super Deluxe Edition (Wii).

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) passed the eight million mark; Just Dance 4 (Wii) passed the two million mark; Kinect Adventures! (X360) passed the 18 million mark; Assassin’s Creed III (PS3) passed the three million mark; Skylanders Giants (Wii) passed the one million mark; Forza Motorsport 4 (X360) passed the three million mark; and Wii Sports passed the 80 million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware home console sales week on week are down across the board. Xbox 360 sales are down 461,930 (-46%) to 534,911 units sold. PlayStation 3 sales are down 237,321 (-32%) to 515,016 units sold. The Wii U sold 325,462 units, a decrease of 136,637 (-30%). The Wii sold 215,349 units, which is down 172,114 (-44%).

Handheld sales are down across the board week on week. The 3DS sold 504,822 units, which is down 110,305 (-55%) week on week. The PlayStation Vita is down 71,788 (-34%) to 137,853 units sold. The DS is down 181,548 (-55%) to 151,331 units sold. The PSP sold 43,809 units which is down 8,679 (-27%) compared to last week. Total week on week sales are down 1.38 million (-36%) to 2.43 million units.

No platforms were up year-over-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 37,614 (-7%), the Wii is down 325,456 (-60%), and the Xbox 360 is down 131,913 (-20%). The PSP is down 123,345 (-74%), the DS is down 101,859 (-40%) and the 3DS is down 289,935 (-36%). Year on year sales are down 546,807 units (-18%).

Hardware Home Consoles

The Xbox 360 has outsold the PlayStation 3 for the fifth time in 2012 and for the fourth week in a row. The Wii U launched in Europe, though it was only available for two days. The Xbox 360 has a 42 percent market share for the seventh generation; the PlayStation 3 has a 41 percent market share; and the Wii has a 17 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are up.

Hardware Handhelds

3DS hardware remains well above its rival, the PlayStation Vita, outselling it by nearly four to 1. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by more than 3 to 1. The PlayStation Vita has nearly outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by more than 3 to 1. The DS has a 78 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds and the PSP has a 22 percent. The 3DS has a 79 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 21 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS, DS, and Vita are up, while the PSP is down.

Worldwide Software

Four games debuted in the top 30 this week. Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen OG (PS3) debuted at number nine with sales of 215,426. The game launched in Japan.

Far Cry 3 (PS3) debuted at number 10 with sales of 213,105. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number 14. The game launched in Europe and will release in North America on December 4.

Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney (3DS) debuted at number 23 with sales of 131,633. The game launched in Japan.

Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Super Deluxe Edition (Wii) debuted at number 30 with sales of 111,445.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) is at the top of the charts with sales of 760,935 units. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) is at number two with sales of 654,449 units. Just Dance 4 (Wii) is at number three with sales of 518,154. Halo 4 (X360) is at number four with sales of 358,373. Kinect Adventures (X360) is at number five with sales of 339,909.

Assassin’s Creed III (PS3) is at number six with sales of 326,239. Assassin’s Creed III (X360) is at number seven with sales of 256,920. Nintendo Land (WiiU) is at number eight with sales of 235,797.

Software

Week on week software sales for home consoles are up for the Wii, and down for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. The Xbox 360 sold the most games this week with sales of 6.68 million, a decrease of 1.01 million (-24%).  The PlayStation 3 sold 6.10 million games this week, a decrease of 420,852 (-6%). Wii software sales are up 37,339 (1%) to 3.95 million games sold. The Wii U sold 695,779 games, a decrease of 541,657.

Handheld software sales week on week are up for the DS and PSP, and down for the 3DS and Vita. The DS sold 2.17 million games, an increase of 278,149 games (15%) week on week. The 3DS sold 1.64 million games, which is up 103,944 (26%).  PSP game sales are up 103,944 (26%) to 502,913 games sold.  The Vita sold 487,926 games, a decrease of 61,416 (-11%). Total combined software is down 1.75 million units (-7%) week on week to 22.23 million.

Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 is up 120,967 (2%), the Wii is down 1.82 million units (-31%) and the Xbox 360 is up 332,549 units (5%). The DS is down 909,031 units (-30%), the PSP is down 336,711 units (-40%) and the 3DS is down 259,515 units (-14%). Total combined software is down 1.68 million units (-7%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

Software sales have decreased for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for a second straight week, following the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops II two weeks ago and Black Friday last week. The Xbox 360 has led for the fourth straight week and for the fifth time in 10 weeks. The PlayStation 3 led for the other five weeks. The Xbox 360 has a 40 percent market share, the PlayStation 3 with 36 percent, and the Wii with 24 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles are up.

Software Handhelds

The DS sold the most software this week. It has led for five of the last 10 weeks. The 3DS led for the other five weeks. The DS has an 81 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 19 percent market share. The 3DS has a 77 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 23 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the all four handhelds are up.

Level-5′s collaboration with Capcom’s lawyering hero is out now in Japan


Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney is out now for Nintendo 3DS in Japan, but that hasn’t stopped Level-5 from sharing more clips. The latest videos showcase the game’s prologue, a pair of adventure sections, and two doses of courtroom action. Watch as puzzles are solved and witnesses are examined after the jump!

Big in Japan Nov. 26 – Dec. 2: Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney

PS3 version of Super Robot Taisen and 3DS adventure game crossover at the top of Japan sales charts; 3DS sales still high.

 

Turn-based strategy gamers, fans of mecha titles like Gundam, and adventure game fans in Japan were in for a treat on the week of November 26 to December 2.

2nd Super Robot Taisen Original Generation for the PS3 was the top-selling game for the week, according to the recent Media Creates sales update. The game sold 217,710 units. Following behind was the adventure game crossover Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney for the 3DS, which sold 128,856 units. The game combines the puzzle-solving sections of the Professor Layton series and the courtroom action of the Ace Attorney series. For more information, check out GameSpot’s coverage on the title.

The PS Vita got a dose of visual novel and RPG action: Fate/stay Night [Realla Nua] and Atelier Totori Plus. The former was at ninth place with 30,583 units sold while the latter was at the 10th spot with 27,651 units sold.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the sole Western title on the top 10. The PS3 version was at seventh place with 36,234 sold for the week. Check out GameSpot’s review on the title for more information.

On the hardware front, the 3DS consoles were still the top-selling items on the list, with the 3DS XL at 106,757 units and the regular 3DS at 60,651 units. Thanks to the recent PS Vita titles mentioned above, Sony’s new portable went up a notch with 11,066 units.
