Simpsons Arcade Game tops February PSN sales

Konami’s coin-op beat-’em-up title leads Sony’s monthly online sales chart; inaugural PS Vita top-selling list topped by puzzler Escape Plan.

The Simpsons Arcade Game didn’t notch the highest review scores at release, but it was the best-selling PlayStation Network title of February, Sony announced today.

The $10 arcade game hit the virtual storefront on February 7, and was available as a free download for all PlayStation Plus members through the month. An HD overhaul of the 1991 original beat-’em-up title, The Simpsons Arcade Game lets players control Homer, Marge, Lisa, and Bart, and pummel foes through a series of side-scrolling levels.

Rounding out the top five PSN titles for February were Gotham City Impostors, The House of the Dead III, Shank 2, and NFL Blitz, which was January’s best-selling PSN title.

With the launch of the PlayStation Vita in North America, Sony also began tracking best-selling downloadable games for the platform. Taking the top spot in the inaugural month was puzzle game Escape Plan. Other top downloadable PS Vita titles for the month were Super Stardust Delta, Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Plants vs. Zombies.

As for February’s best-selling PS3 add-ons, Final Fantasy XIII-2′s new Opponent: Lightning & Amodar downloadable content took the top spot. Released on February 7 for $3, the content adds a new Coliseum battle to the role-playing game. Other popular PS3 add-ons in February were Battlefield 3′s Back to Karkand expansion and Specact Kit and Dog Tag Bundle, Battle Attire for FFXIII-2, and the Car Pack 3 for Gran Turismo 5.

The PS One Classics category was topped by Square Enix Final Fantasy games, as well as Twisted Metal 2 and Resident Evil 2. For PSP, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite grabbed the top two spots.

Konami’s HD update of arcade beat-’em-up includes four-player co-op, unlockable Japanese version, and three modes.

Yesterday, Sony revealed that The Simpsons Arcade Game would arrive on the PlayStation Network next week for PlayStation Plus subscribers, but Xbox 360 gamers will get it first.

Simpsons Arcade Game arriving next week for PlayStation Plus subscribers

HD update of 1991 beat-’em-up confirmed for release on PlayStation Network on February 7 for paying subscribers only; four-player online co-op included.

It has been over four years since gamers had a new Simpsons console title to play, but that’s changing next week when The Simpsons Arcade Game launches on the PlayStation Network.

Today, Sony announced that The Simpsons Arcade Game will launch on the PSN on February 7 as a free game download for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Sony did not note if the game will be made available to non-PlayStation Plus users.

An HD overhaul of the 1991 original beat-’em-up title, the game lets players control Homer, Marge, Lisa, and Bart, and pummel foes through a series of side-scrolling levels. Four-player online co-op has also been confirmed for the game.

The game was first teased in November, when a listing with the Australian government pegged the title for a multiplatform release. Presently, the game has been announced only for the PSN.

Electronic Arts released an iOS version of The Simpsons Arcade Game in 2009, but the most recent console Simpsons title was The Simpsons Game, which was released in 2007 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS, PlayStation 2, and PSP.

Simpsons Arcade Game rated for multiple platforms

Australian rating board issues classification for new release of Konami coin-op beat-’em-up; Backbone Entertainment listed as developer.

The Simpsons Arcade Game may finally be in line for its first console port. As reported by XBLA Fans, the Australian government’s Classification Board has updated its database with a listing for The Simpsons Arcade Game on multiple platforms.

Originally released in 1991, The Simpsons Arcade Game was a four-player beat-’em-up from Konami. The game allowed players to plow through side-scrolling levels as Bart, Lisa, Homer, and Marge, pummeling generic suit-wearing bad guys, Matt Groening Life is Hell extras, and recognizable residents of Springfield alike. The arcade game was ported to the PC and Commodore 64 the same year, but never made it to the consoles of the time.

In 2009, Electronic Arts released a mobile phone game called The Simpsons Arcade, but the new classification suggests that the project is unrelated. Handed down yesterday, the listing details Konami as the publisher and retro specialist Backbone Entertainment as the developer. The Emeryville, California-based studio has previously released downloadable versions of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. It also developed Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, a compilation of 40 games from Sega’s 16-bit system, for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

The Simpsons is another in a line of downloadable console ports for Konami’s licensed coin-op games of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Last year, Konami and Backbone teamed up to release X-Men: The Arcade Game on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The publisher also worked with Ubisoft for 2007′s Xbox 360 release of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game and in 2009 saw the French publisher remake the game’s arcade sequel, Turtles in Time.

Despite the classification, there are still a handful of licensed Konami arcade games of the era still awaiting a modern rerelease. Notably, the publisher’s 1992 arcade games Bucky O’Hare and Wild West C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa have yet to find their way to contemporary consoles.
