Steam launches non-game software store

Its digital distribution storefront will now feature productivity and creativity software; launch titles include 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark 11.

 

Valve has expanded its Steam digital storefront to include non-gaming software, launching the first wave of titles today.

The range of creativity and productivity software tools that currently available for download through Steam include:

ArtRage Studio Pro

CameraBag 2

GameMaker: Studio

3D-Coat

3DMark Vantage

3DMark 11

Valve has said that many of these launch titles will take advantage of Steamworks features, including automatic updating, and the ability for users to save their work to their personal Steam Cloud space. GameMaker: Studio also features integration with Steam Workshop, which allows users to share their work via Steam.

To celebrate the launch of its non-gaming software on Steam, Valve will be making all launch titles in the range available for 10 percent off their regular price throughout the week.

Steam currently boasts more than 40 million users, and the service also recently added a free filmmaker tool.

Steam adding non-gaming software

Valve bringing unspecified productivity and creativity software to distribution platform on Sept. 5; some will leverage Steamworks features.

 

Valve will expand the offerings for Steam users to non-gaming software next month, the company announced today. Beginning September 5, gamers will be able to download software ranging from creativity to productivity tools.

No software titles were announced, but Valve said many of the offerings available at launch will leverage Steamworks features, including automatic updating and Steam Cloud support.

Additional software titles will be added following the September 5 launch, with developers able to submit their applications through the newly launched Steam Greenlight crowd-voting process, which launches August 30.

According to Valve’s business development staffer Mark Richardson, Steam users have expressed an interest in using Steam for more than just playing games, and “this expansion is a response to those customer requests.”

Borderlands 2 taps into Steamworks

Gearbox Software teams with Valve for Steam achievements, DLC, auto-updating, matchmaking, and Steam Cloud support for new shooter.

 

Gearbox Software’s upcoming shooter Borderlands 2 will benefit from Valve’s Steamworks features, publisher 2K Games announced today.

Retail and downloaded copies of Borderlands 2 will enjoy Steamworks features. These include Steam achievements, downloadable content, auto-updating, matchmaking, and Steam Cloud support.

Borderlands 2 is the sequel to 2009′s lauded original stylized shooter. It is due out for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on September 18 in North America, with an international release following on September 21.
