Twitch viewing app hits Xbox 360

New app from video site available only in the United States for Xbox Live Gold subscribers; does not allow streaming, only viewing.

Video platform Twitch today announced the arrival of a dedicated app for Xbox 360 that will allow gamers to view content, but not stream it. The Twitch app for Xbox 360 is only available in the United States to those with an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Twitch’s worldwide audience now stands at 34 million unique viewers per month, and the arrival of the Xbox 360 app is a measure of reaching gamers wherever they are, CEO Emmet Shear said in a statement.

“Our app for Xbox 360 brings Twitch video to the television and into the living room of millions of Xbox Live members for the first time,” Shear said. “Given the huge number Xbox owners and how many of them love gaming spectatorship, it’s a natural fit to bring the Twitch experience to the 360.”

Twitch launched during the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo and has since partnered with a string of high-profile companies and brands, including Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and Activision.

Using the Twitch app for Xbox 360, players will be able to watch the top 300 live Twitch channels and browse videos either by channel, game, or featured content.

Ouya launches June 4

$99 Android-powered console launching this summer in United States, Canada, and United Kingdom.

The $99 Android-powered Ouya console will launch June 4 in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, its developers have announced. The system began its life last July though a Kickstarter campaign that raised $1 million in 24 hours and more than $8.5 million when it closed.

“Nine months ago, we shared an idea for an immersive, beautiful, and powerful game console that generated an outpouring of support from game developers, gamers, technology enthusiasts, and more,” Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said in a statement.

According to Ouya, more than 8,000 developers are creating games for the platform ranging from start-ups to established companies like Square Enix, Double Fine, Tripwire Interactive, and Airtight Games.

On top of games, the Ouya will support a suite of apps. These include streaming video and music software like Twitch.tv, Flixster, Plex, XBMC, Crunchyroll, iHeartRadio, and others.

Ouya units are shipping to backers immediately, while units will be available for purchase in June at Amazon, Best Buy, GAME, GameStop, Target, and through the Ouya online store. Additional controllers can be purchased for $50.

A new Ouya console will launch every year to take advantage of component price drops.

In addition, Ouya hired Thatgamecompany cofounder Kellee Santiago in February to lead developer relations. She may want to speak with Borderlands developer Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford, who said last week that he is cautious about the system.

Arkane teases Dishonored news

Developer says it has something to share related to the stealth action game tomorrow.

Arkane has teased Dishonored news for tomorrow. The developer tweeted an image today (below), along with a message that simply reads: “News tomorrow.”

No further information was divulged, though the developer could be teasing an announcement of one of the two previously announced story-focused Dishonored expansions that will be released in 2013.

The first will focus on Daud, the leader of a legion of supernatural assassins known as The Whalers. It is due out sometime this spring.

In addition, Dishonored parent publisher Zenimax recently trademarked “Void Walker’s Arsenal” and “The Brigmore Witches,” the latter of which is referenced in a Dishonored in-game book.

Dishonored launched in October and was the United States’ fourth-best-selling game of the month. It was also the only non-sequel to make the top-10 chart during the month. The game’s first expansion–Dunwall City Trials–launched in December.

$300 Xbox 360 Spring Bundle revealed

US-exclusive bundle includes 250GB system, copies of Darksiders II and Batman: Arkham City, and one-month Xbox Live token.

The spring season does not officially begin until March 20, but for Microsoft, it starts now. The company has announced a new Xbox 360 Spring Bundle that is shipping to retailers in the United States today.

The $300 bundle includes a 250GB system, copies of Darksiders II (physical) and Batman: Arkham City (digital), and a one-month Xbox Live token. No mention was made of a release for the bundle outside of the United States.

Microsoft is expected to announce its next-generation Xbox during a one-off media event in April. Rumors about the console have run rampant, with speculation about the device suggesting it will not work without Kinect, require an Internet connection, block used games, and have Siri-like voice recognition.

None of that, of course, is confirmed.
