Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown hits June 5

Sega sets fighting game’s downloadable debut on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for the week of E3, $15 price point and DLC customization packs confirmed.

It’s been five years since the last new Virtua Fighter game debuted on consoles, but the wait for a new installment in Sega’s flagship fighting franchise ends next month. Sega today announced that Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown will arrive on the PlayStation Network on June 5, with an Xbox Live Arcade release set for June 6.

Described as an update and expansion to previous versions of the game, Final Showdown will sell for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points) on each system’s downloadable storefront. In addition to new modes, arenas, and customizable character items, the game will add two more combatants to the game’s roster. Virtua Fighter veterans will welcome the return of Virtua Fighter 3 sumo wrestler Taka-Arashi, while those eager to try out a new style can look forward to the debut of Jean Kujo.

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown will also feature online multiplayer action for both systems. Sega has promised “little to no latency” for online matches, with leaderboards to keep track of rank. For more solitary fighters, Final Showdown will also include a new single-player mode where players fight “an army of opponents” on their own.

Sega is also planning a variety of downloadable content in the form of character customization packs available at launch. Players will be able to buy character-specific content for each of the game’s 19 characters for $5 (400 Microsoft points) per pack, or they can purchase two bundles of customization DLC, each selling for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points) and covering about half of the game’s roster.

Capcom/Sega/Namco Bandai’s Project X Zone Characters Confirmed

Characters from Mega Man, Darkstalkers, Xenosaga, .hack, Virtua Fighter, Tales of Vesperia more to appear

Sega, Namco Bandai, and Capcom crossover project revealed

Project X Zone billed as strategy RPG for 3DS; features characters from Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, and Tales Of series.

The mystery project Capcom, Sega, and Namco Bandai were rumored to be working on has finally been revealed. Website Andriasang, citing advance copies of Famitsu, says the collaboration is called Project X Zone.

Project X Zone is a strategy RPG for the 3DS. Characters from different franchises like Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter will team up in pairs for fighting scenes initiated during combat. Based on the information from
Hachima blog (via Sgcafe), the characters showed off and announced for the Capcom side so far are Ryu and Ken, X and Zero from the Mega Man series, Demitri and Dante (Darkstalkers and Devil May Cry respectively), and Chris and Jill from the Resident Evil series.

The party members from the Sega side are Shinguji Sakura and Ogami Ichiro from Sakura Wars, Ulala and Touma from Space Channel 5 and Shining Force respectively, Kurt and Reila from the Valkyria Chronicles series, and Pai and Akira from the Virtua Fighter franchise.

From Namco Bandai’s stable, players will get to use Sanger Somvold from Super Robot Wars, Jin and Xiaoyu from the Tekken franchise, Kos-Mos and T-elos from Xenosaga, Yurie and Estelle from Tales of Vesperia, and Black Rose and Kaito from the .hack franchise. Based on the screenshots from the above link, the game may be emulating the combat system from Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier for the DS. A trailer for the game will be up this month.

The last time Namco Bandai and Capcom teamed up for an RPG was Namco X Capcom back in 2005. The PS2 game received average reviews in Japan, but was the top-selling title during its week of release at 87,223 units. The game was never released outside of its native country.

Dead or Alive could get crossover fighter

Team Ninja head says the studio would be interested in dropping the gloves with a fellow fighting franchise, singles out Virtua Fighter as most respected rival series.

Dead or Alive and Virtua Fighter could be the next fighting game franchises on a crossover collision course.

Speaking with Edge, Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi said the Dead or Alive 5 developer would be interested in pursuing crossover opportunities along the lines of next month’s Street Fighter X Tekken, and then expressed his particular admiration for Sega’s Virtua Fighter franchise.

“In terms of collaboration titles, there are staff on our team who just love fighting games and if there was any chance to do that we’d actively, possibly do that,” Hayashi said, adding, “The first 3D game I played was Virtua Fighter, that’s the IP I respect most. Virtua Fighter was the father of 3D gaming, so it’s very well respected.”

Hayashi also discussed a change in how Team Ninja treats its female characters. Once known as much for scant garb and outsized anatomy as fighting fundamentals, the new Dead or Alive will apparently take a more respectful approach to women.

“Up to now we thought, with other games, let’s show the beauty of a woman,” Hayashi told the site. “How do we do that? Make her breasts big and just make them jiggle, that was the concept.”

Dead or Alive 5 is set for release later this year. A demo of the fighting game is being offered as a preorder bonus for Team Ninja’s other new title, Ninja Gaiden III, which is set for release March 20.
